At MacLaren, students are introduced in†10th†grade to testing that is related to the college admission process when they take the†Pre-ACT, a practice test for the ACT.† Juniors will retake the†PSAT†and may qualify for what's known as the National Merit Scholarship if they have scores that fall typically in the top 5% of the national pool.† The PSAT†is a†practice†test and is not used for college admissions; however, some summer programs request scores from a nationally administered test for consideration to their programs.
College admission testing begins in earnest, typically in the spring of the Junior year. †Starting with the class of 2017, all Colorado students will take the Colorado†SAT†(paid for the state and accepted by colleges worldwide) in April at MacLaren, on a school day designated by the state.† Students are encouraged to consider taking the ACT as well†by the end of their Junior year so that they can evaluate which test they match best with in planning to retake one test.
Students may want to consider taking appropriate "Subject Tests" (a College Board product) throughout their high school careers if they are considering applying to highly selective colleges/universities that may require them for admission consideration or are considering applying to International colleges.
There are an increasing number of schools that are "test optional" which means their admission process doesn't require the submission of test scores or may only require them for entrance into specific majors (engineering, for example).† To explore the list of over 850 schools, visit†Fairtest.††And review the following list to get some sense of where you might fit in, both in terms of admission and your college "match":
- Reality Check (25-75 score range of current college freshman by colleges)
- Institutions requiring Subject Tests
- Institutions requiring a Writing test score
- Understanding the new SAT scores in terms of college admission
